Welcome to my blog! I am Max Janssen, a young Dutch author who has a complicated relationship with the Dutch language. Growing up, I believed I would never need any other language. However, learning English changed my perspective. Not only did English open up a world of understanding for me, but I also found it much easier than Dutch. As someone diagnosed with dyslexia, I appreciate languages that are as straightforward as possible. While my English might not be perfect, my priority right now is developing my story—the grammar will follow.
Overcoming Dyslexia: My Journey with Words
When I was diagnosed with dyslexia, many people doubted my ability to write well and advised me to focus on other pursuits for success. They also predicted that reading would be challenging and unenjoyable for me. Contrary to their beliefs, I fell in love with reading from a very young age. Fantasy stories, in particular, captivated my imagination. Despite my diagnosis, I was one of the fastest readers in my class. I was the kid who didn't want to stop reading when the teacher instructed us to and took every opportunity to immerse myself in books.
The Transition: From High School to College
Unfortunately, my reading habit dwindled in high school due to time constraints. I opted for easier books, such as the Percy Jackson series, to balance the academic demands. After high school, I pursued my passion for animals by studying animal health and management in college. While I enjoyed this field, the urge to write my own story never faded. It grew stronger during my college years, prompting me to start developing my own narrative in the back of my mind.
Inspirations and Aspirations
My story is inspired by several notable works, including "The Kingkiller Chronicle," "A Song of Ice and Fire," and "The Wheel of Time." These stories not only influence my approach to magic and world-building but also make it easier for me to translate my imagination into words.
